It would be easy to click a button and close my browser against the news. It would be easy to just push aside the sadness that makes it difficult to swallow as I read the news about the devastation following the earthquake in Haiti.
It hurts. All the way across the ocean, in my comfortable, American middle-class home where I have never known want, I don’t want to hurt for Haiti. I don’t want to hurt and feel helpless, because what can I do aside from hurting and praying?
But I do. I have a small note on my computer monitor, with one word, to remind me to pray: “Haiti.” I’ve contributed to Compassion Child’s Haiti fund. Next week, I will contribute from my next paycheck to the Red Cross.
And I’m praying.
